These are frequently confused. Free software: freedom to run, study, change and share. Open source: the source code is published and may be modified, subject to the licence. Freeware: free to use but the source is closed and it may not be modified. Shareware: free to try for a period, then payment is required. Commercial: paid, closed source, restricted by the licence agreement.
